Ink on paper
10 illustrations, unsealed
Late in his life, Hokusai began drawing a lion every day, leaving over 200 of these illustrations.
The artist compiled most of the lion drawings and presented them in 1847 to Miyamoto Shinsuke, the warrior of the Matsushiro clan, as a talisman gift with a message attached.
Ten pictures given to Honma Hokuyo, Hokusai's pupil, upon request.
Hokusai entitled the works NISSHIN-JOMA Daily Charm against Evil implying that every day should start out clean without evil. In comparison to ordered illustrations, these pictures show the free-flowing spirit of Hokusai's personal works.
The NISSHIN-JOMA pictures reflect the artist's wit with the changing figures of Karajishi lions and the lion dances.
