Signed Gakyorojin Manji's Trial Work at age 85, sealed Katsushika
132.5~42.2cm
This piece is based on a Chinese legendary tale of Moso, a dutiful son who gathered bamboo shoot in the cold for his parents.
The image of a farmer hurrying home with two bamboo shoots hanging from his hoe is painted with Hokusai's characteristic strong brush strokes.
Hokusai's continuing pursuit for the original source of subject matter led him beyond his own country. The numerous works based on Chinese legends and historic literature manifest his passion.
